Background

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a country with a fascinating history and complex geography. Long before colonization, the Kingdom of Kongo was an influential regional power, maintaining diplomatic ties with Europe. In 1604, the kingdom even sent an ambassador to the Vatican. However, the late 19th century marked a turning point when Belgium’s King Leopold II annexed the territory that would later become the DRC.

What followed was, in the words of historian David van Reybrouck, “a massacre of incredible extent, which was not intended, but a consequence of a perfidious and ruthless policy of exploitation with the background of morbid profit-thirst.” The exploitation of the Congo, a country 77 times the size of Belgium, was fueled by its immense wealth of natural resources. To facilitate this exploitation, an extensive transportation network was required.

While Belgium constructed roads and railways, many remote mining sites, plantations, and mission posts were most conveniently accessed by airplane. As a result, hundreds of small airstrips were established across the country. Most were simple dirt runways, cleared of vegetation either manually or by light machinery. Some were no more than flattened fields in the savanna or rainforest.

Airfields in the Congo

Today, hundreds of airfields exist across the Congo, while hundreds more have been abandoned or even completely redeveloped. Yet, only a handful of major airports — the largest and most important ones — are officially and accurately documented. For smaller airstrips, documentation is often incomplete, and even their recorded coordinates can be unreliable. Still, as long as an airstrip is active, it can usually be identified on satellite imagery, since a runway is relatively easy to spot.

However, the challenge becomes entirely different when dealing with abandoned airfields. With nothing more than a name and an imprecise set of coordinates, pinpointing their former locations can be extremely difficult — let alone uncovering details about their history. Locating such sites often requires scouring old maps and aeronautical charts, searching for any geographic documentation that might reveal clues. In some cases, even identifying the location of the place an airfield was named after can be a challenge. Occasionally, an airport’s name appears in colonial-era documents, offering insight into why and when it was established.

ICAO Codes in the Congo

An ICAO Code is a four-letter identifier assigned to an airport by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). These codes are published quarterly in ICAO Document 7910 and are crucial for aviation operations, including flight planning, navigation, and communication.

The first letter of an ICAO code designates the global region, while the second letter represents the country. In the case of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, all ICAO codes begin with FZ:

  • F stands for Central and Southern Africa,
  • Z was assigned to Zaire, the country’s former name.

The last two letters indicate the airport itself. In many countries, ICAO codes are designed to resemble the airport’s name—for example, LFPO stands for L (Europe), F (France), P (Paris), O (Orly).

However, the Congo followed a different system. Instead of being based on airport names, ICAO codes were assigned alphabetically by region, moving clockwise across the country:

The origins of this alphabetical system date back to the colonial era, when ICAO codes were first assigned to airports in the Belgian Congo. However, only a fraction of airfields were assigned codes — many remained without official designation. Surprisingly, ICAO codes were not exclusively reserved for major airports; some tiny dirt airstrips also received official designations. Many of these have since vanished, leaving behind nothing but a name in the registry — as the next section will illustrate.

Codes, Coordinates, and Mysteries

Today, 286 airports in the Congo have an official ICAO code, yet hundreds more exist without any formal registration. The absence of an official database for small airstrips makes documentation difficult. Even among those that do have ICAO codes, many have been abandoned for decades, and their actual locations remain unclear.

Here are some examples of these discrepancies:

  • Bikoro Airport (FZBC) appears in the ICAO registry, yet Bikoro has never had an airport — a fact confirmed by old maps and even local sources.
  • Konde Airport (FZAU) is listed in databases, but at its recorded coordinates, there is nothing but forest and farmland. However, an old map proves that the airstrip once existed, though no trace remains today.
  • Gandajika Airport (FZWC) presents another mystery. At its officially listed coordinates, no airstrip is visible. However, by analyzing old maps and comparing them with historic satellite imagery, the correct location can be found several kilometers away — along with the faint traces of a long-abandoned runway.
  • Some ICAO codes appear to be missing, such as FZAO. While FZAN and FZAP exist, FZAO does not. Was this code never assigned, or was it removed from ICAO records at some point?
  • At -7.762146°, 18.186861°, deep in the Kwango savannah, a clearly visible runway appears on satellite imagery. This airfield has no name and is not documented anywhere. There are no settlements nearby, and the only access is via small footpaths. What was its purpose?

The Congo’s aviation records are filled with similar mysteries—where runways exist without documentation, and documented runways no longer exist.
